Gitobu Imanyara
From the classrooms of Nairobi School and the study of law at the University of Nairobi to journalism, human-rights advocacy and public service, his journey has unfolded across some of Kenya's defining moments.
Born in Central Imenti
Gitobu Imanyara was born on 12 August 1953 in Central Imenti, in present-day Meru County, Kenya.
Nairobi School
His secondary education took place at Nairobi School, where he developed early leadership experience. He served as Scott House Prefect in 1972 and became a School Prefect in 1973.
University of Nairobi
He studied law at the University of Nairobi, graduating with an LL.B with honours and beginning the professional path that would combine legal practice with public affairs.
Called to the Bar
After completing his professional legal training, he was called to the Bar in October 1978.
Founded Gitobu Imanyara & Co. Advocates
In 1979, after being called to the Bar, Gitobu Imanyara began practising as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and founded Gitobu Imanyara & Co. Advocates. The firm has since been associated with constitutional, human rights and public interest legal work.
Nairobi Law Monthly
In September 1987, Gitobu Imanyara established the Nairobi Law Monthly, creating a platform that became associated with legal affairs, public debate and questions surrounding governance and democratic freedoms in Kenya.
Journalism Under Pressure
His journalism and public advocacy brought increasing pressure from the authorities. He was detained and prosecuted in connection with his work, while restrictions were placed around the Nairobi Law Monthly.
He was released on 28 May 1991 after sedition charges against him were dropped.
Democracy Award
He received the National Endowment for Democracy Democracy Award, adding to international recognition associated with his work in journalism and democratic advocacy.
Entered Parliament
Gitobu Imanyara was elected Member of Parliament for Central Imenti in 1997. During his parliamentary career, he also chaired the Great Lakes Parliamentary Forum on Peace.
Return to Parliament
He returned to Parliament following the 2007 general election, again representing Central Imenti and taking part in parliamentary committee work and regional parliamentary engagement, including the Pan-African Parliament.
The Platform
In 2014, Gitobu Imanyara established The Platform, a monthly publication created to provide a forum for independent commentary on law, justice and society. The publication extended his long involvement in journalism and public discourse into a new generation.
Research at Strathmore University
He pursued postgraduate legal research at Strathmore University, examining Articles 27 and 98 of the Rome Statute and the question of immunity of serving heads of state before the International Criminal Court.

Today, Gitobu Imanyara continues to contribute to public discourse through journalism, legal perspectives and civic engagement, carrying forward a career shaped by law, the press and public service.
